Alexa Lighting Up The Blue Ring Problem

Different lights on the Echo Dot device indicate its current status.

In fact, these lights are a way for Alexa to communicate with the user. It tries to tell you something important with different colors.

The most common color you often see is spinning blue with a cyan spotlight.

Keep reading to find out what the Alexa Blue Ring means if you notice a continuous blue ring around the device.

Alexa Blue Ring:

Alexa does not have a button to activate it. It triggers listening to the wake words.

Every time you use the wake-up word followed by a command, you see a blue light swirling around.

The blue ring indicates that the request is in the processing stage.

The smart speaker doesn’t respond with any light if it is inactive. No light means Alexa is not listening. It is waiting for you to say the wake-up word and voice command.

At times, the device illuminates even when not in use.

It means the Amazon Alexa device picked up sounds from outside or other people conversing in another room.

It may misinterpret the sounds as voice commands. Alexa glows blue as it processes the noise.

The blue ring light flashing will disappear by itself within a few seconds. Or you can tell Alexa to stop processing noise by saying, "Alexa, stop."

The Spinning Blue Light On Alexa

There are three cases for spinning blue light:

  • A steadily spinning blue light
  • Blue light spinning for a few moments
  • Spinning blue followed by a purple flash (Read the Alexa Purple Ring Section)

A Steadily/Continuously Spinning Blue Light:

Consider the following two reasons that may cause a constant spinning light:
  • Pairing mode of the device:
  • Updating the firmware

If your smart assistant is currently in pairing mode, it will show a constantly spinning ring. This spinning blue light will disappear after the device successfully pairs with your smartphone.
Another reason for the same is a software update running in the background.
The blue ring around the Echo smart device means it is updating its software if it is already paired.
It implies a firmware update and will not let you use the device during the process. You can wait until the working process is finished.
Now, it is clear that a continuous blue ring signifies:
The device requires pairing.
If the Echo is already paired, then it conveys the idea of the firmware being updated.

Blue Light Spinning For A Few Moments:

  • Alexa takes a moment or two to process the voice commands.
  • A blue circle indicates the processing period. Thus, this color indicates that Alexa heard what you said and is working on your command.
  • Don’t worry, this is a normal process. The blue light will vanish when Alexa completes processing.
  • Another reason for this type of blue ring can be the Echo device being in restart mode. You can set the device in restart mode or it can restart on its own.
  • Once the booting process gets over, the Alexa blue ring also vanishes. If it does not, check the Alexa app for any other issues.

A Spinning Blue Followed By A Purple Flash:

  • You may notice Alexa with a spinning blue light followed by a purple flash after giving a voice command.
  • It means Alexa Setup is processing your voice command but also indicates a Do Not Disturb mode. In this mode, Alexa becomes unresponsive.
  • If it was you who enabled this mode, then it is OK.
  • To disable this mode, press the mute button located on the top of your digital assistant.
  • Otherwise, log into the app and toggle the DND Status using your smartphone.
  • After you disable the DND mode, Alexa will start responding to your commands.

Bottom Line:

Indication of status with different lights is a signature feature of Alexa.
The blue color conveys that it is working fine and does not need any concern.
